About The Crane Restaurant

The Crane Restaurant sits in the heart of Melbourne at 212 Little Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia, and welcomes diners with a blend of classic flavours and lively city energy. Many locals call ahead at +61 3 9663 1851 to secure a table, especially during busy evenings. Within the first steps inside, visitors sense why The Crane Restaurant has become a familiar name for those seeking comforting Chinese dishes prepared with traditional skill and modern balance. The menu spans dumplings, roasted favourites and rich regional plates that keep both regulars and curious newcomers returning.

Dining Experience at The Crane Restaurant

Walking into the dining room feels warm and relaxed. The space carries the hum of conversation mixed with the aroma of slow roasted duck and fragrant spices. Guests come for casual dinners, pre-show meals and family gatherings. The restaurant offers reservations, takeaway and a steady selection of beer for those who prefer a drink with their meal.

The staff moves quickly through the room and the service can vary during peak hours. While many guests remark on friendly interactions, others note that the service can feel rushed. These differences tend to reflect how busy the restaurant is at the time of the visit. What remains consistent is the flow of dishes arriving hot from the kitchen.

First Impressions from Diners

Several diners praise the flavours and value of the dishes, describing generous portions and balanced seasoning. One review highlights how enjoyable the food was and how well the serving size matched the price. Another mentions the wonton in spicy soup and the chicken spare ribs in salt and pepper as favourites worth ordering again.

Not all experiences are the same. Some guests report smaller portions than expected and moments of unfriendly service. These mixed impressions paint a realistic picture of a fast working kitchen in a high demand area. Despite this, many still note the quality of several dishes and the variety across the menu.

Signature Dumplings and Small Plates

Dumplings remain a centrepiece of the menu. The Prawn Dumplings offer a clean and delicate bite with a gentle sweetness from the fresh prawn. The Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings appeal to diners looking for lighter options with bright vegetable flavours wrapped in soft dough. Those who enjoy richer textures often turn to the Pan Fried Peking Dumplings Pork, which arrive with crisp bottoms and juicy centres.

Small plates cover both familiar and adventurous tastes. The Chonquing Chicken is bold and aromatic with a blend of spice that warms without overwhelming. Pig Intestine with Pickled Mustard caters to diners looking for authentic regional cooking. The Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables and stirfried green beans with jerky carry strong wok-fried aromas that pair well with rice dishes.

Roasted and Braised Specialties

The Cantonese Roasted Duck is one of the most recognised items on the menu. Its glossy skin and tender meat show the attention paid to traditional roasting methods. Another favourite is the Steam Fish with Ginger and Shallot, known for its simple preparation that highlights freshness above all else. Diners looking for a satisfying plate often choose the Beef and Vegetables, a dependable option with a comforting balance of textures.

The sichuan spicy blind cobfish rice stands out for its depth of flavour. The heat comes through steadily and the fish stays tender in the sauce. For those who prefer milder choices, pak choy cooked with garlic is a refreshing counterpoint to richer dishes.

Rice and Noodle Classics

Rice and noodle dishes anchor the menu, offering comfort and variety. The crane special fried rice includes a generous mix of ingredients, giving it a pleasing mix of savoury notes in every spoonful. The singapore fried rice noodle brings a gentle curry fragrance with soft yet springy noodles. Those seeking a traditional taste may enjoy the hong kong shark fin soup, prepared in a style that mirrors classic street bowls from Hong Kong.

Another warming option is the 京骨芙蓉饭, a dish that layers flavour with a smooth finish. Many diners pair these plates with sides such as spicy bean curd minced pork, which blends softness and spice in a satisfying way.

Atmosphere and Practical Details

Evening diners will notice the lively pace of the restaurant. Groups often settle in with small plates before moving to shared mains. The relaxed style makes it a comfortable place for gatherings. Takeaway orders move briskly, giving busy workers and residents a dependable option during the week.

Beer is available for those who enjoy a drink with their meal and the menu encourages exploration across regions. Whether choosing a roasted dish, a plate filled with spice or a simple bowl of dumplings, guests find something that suits their mood.

From the very start, the service was exceedingly great, the staff knew how to greet, sit us down and take our orders perfectly. It is also very child friendly and they had a cute little kid bowl for my son to eat out of. The food was fast, amazing and traditional Chinese, exactly what we wanted in the heart of Chinatown. We looked at a few different restaurants and ended up choosing this great place, and glad we did because it was perfect! The menu is amazing, the food is amazing and the service is spectacular! Highly recommend!

My son & I were roaming around China Town one evening looking for some take away before heading to Lightscape at the Botanical gardens. The maitre d out the front of The Crane restaurant made our choice easy, because he was friendly and engaging with us whilst we were on the street. We ended up ordering their Singapore noodles easy choice We waited inside for around 15mins- whilst enjoying the warmth ( it was a coolish August night) and looking at their fresh crays in their tanks. I have to say their singapore noodles were one of the best I've ever eaten. Absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back again for a sit down meal. 10 out of 10 !

Loved everything. I had the shredded duck and scallop soup followed by steamed rice and Cantonese Duck. I've read some reviews talking about getting small serves of duck, mine was half a duck I'm sure, very generous. Food tasted amazing. Service was efficient and friendly. Highly recommended.

was nervous because of the rating and some of these reviews but it was so good! mum and sister flew to visit me and we ate here on a sunday evening. service was super kind and the food came pretty quick. i often get disappointed ordering duck most places because it can be greasy and taste old, but the roast duck here was hot and fresh, thick juicy pieces with nice crispy skin. all the dumplings were very tasty and every dish came out hot, you could tell it was all freshly cooked. even the food from other tables smelled delicious. surprised why others haven’t had such a good experience, it didn’t seem very busy either. overall it was very tasty, the staff were attentive and kind, not too busy or loud, great place to get a meal in the city.

We wandered up and down little bourke st looking for a restaurant still open at 10pm. Wary of some other restaurants that have huge surcharges for card payment (even saw one with 15%). The wait staff were welcoming, and the food was prepared promptly and was fresh. They provided a kids highchair and bowl for our baby. Spring rolls delicious, fried wantons were really tasty. Dumplings and mains were also very tasty. Soft shell crab is perfect. One negative was the sauce/gravy served with the crispy noodles seemed quite oily.
